On August 16, 1972, 15-year-old Ingrid Bauer left her Kleinburg around 9:30 p.m. en route to hitchhike to her boyfriend’s house. She was never seen again.

On Aug. 16, 1972, Ingrid Bauer left her home at 9:30 p.m. in Kleinburg (what was then Vaughn) to hitchhike to the home of her boyfriend, Larry Teeple, also 14, in Woodbridge. The distance was only six kms.

Before she left, she told her father she would be home by 10:30 p.m.

Her brother saw her on southbound Islington Avenue. Another witness, Terry Bell, then 18, saw Ingrid walking south on the west side of Islington Ave near Pennon Road about 9:45 p.m.

When Ingrid’s boyfriend called her home and let her family know she never showed up, a frantic hunt began involving 200 volunteers who searched 20-square miles around the Bauer home. Police officers reportedly waded into the Humber River for eight kms. and scuba divers searched an old gravel pit.

She was never found.

Several Kleinburg residents reported hearing the cries of a young person near Islington Avenue and Sevilla Drive around 10 p.m. that night. Residents also told police that they had seen a pickup truck in that area, but a search of the location turned up nothing. There were five original suspects who were all cleared through confirmed alibis.

McDougall, Neil James

Missing: Neil McDougall

Circumstances

Neil McDougall left Three-Way Demolition in Durham on Friday, October 11, 1985 with a co-worker and went home. He had an argument with his wife and the friend left. After supper Mr. McDougall went to Ayton, to the Commercial Hotel. He left the hotel with someone else and they met up elsewhere with the co-worker. Mr. McDougall returned to the hotel and left at closing time, between 1:30 – 1:40 am. He was last reported leaving a residence on Edmund Street, Ayton at 2 a.m. October 12, 1985. His pickup truck was discovered near Ayton later that day. The ashtray was filled with different brands of cigarette butts. He has been described as meticulous, habitual, responsible and hardworking. When he went missing, Neil was planning to adopt his wife's children. Foul play is suspected. Mr. McDougall was declared legally dead in 1996. In 2007, the case was reopened and OPP Det.-Const. Dan Linkenheld told the media that police believe they knew what happened and they needed someone to finally talk about what they would only call "an event" attended by "many people" after bar-closing time the night McDougall disappeared.

Audrey Desjardins disappeared on her way home from St. Davids canning factory
Website hoped to link Welland woman missing since 1996

(Archived) Sun Media, Nov 18, 2009

The case of Audrey Desjardins, one of those highlighted on the site, has stumped investigators and relatives for years.

NRP Det. Const. Deb Smith said the then 43-year-old woman was last seen 13 years ago after she dropped off a friend in Welland following a night shift at Nabisco.

As usual, the two women told each other they’d see each other again that night for work.

“No one ever saw (Audrey) again,” Smith said.

The burgundy 1985 Ford Crown Victoria she had been driving – a Mother’s Day present from her husband – has never been spotted, either.

Police carried out 35 dives in the Welland Canal and water bodies across the region over the course of five years looking for the missing woman without success.

The case remains fresh on the minds of dive unit members and others who’ve searched for Audrey, regardless of the time that’s passed, Smith said.

“It impacts everyone when someone goes missing. It’s not just the family that loses. It’s the community that loses,” she said.

“I think that’s what makes this project so special – we care.”

Gaetan Desjardins said he hopes the online database will help bring the family some answers about what happened to his wife.

“We may get some closure,” he said. “It’s almost 13 years ago. They didn’t find a car. They didn’t find clues. Nothing. There’s no trace. If you have a trace, you have something to go on.”

Maas, Lisa

Missing: Lisa Leona Maas

Circumstances

Lisa was last seen on the morning of Sunday, July 17th, 1988, leaving a house party in Woodford, Ontario. Although she arrived at the party with a girlfriend and male acquaintance, her girlfriend stayed behind when Lisa left. The male acquaintance left with Lisa. According to his statement, he drove Lisa back to her car and she left for home. Two days after her disappearance, Lisa's green 1976 Plymouth Fury was found on a blind road running through a farmer's property. The car had been stuck in the mud and there were indications that attempts were made to dislodge the car. The day before her disappearance, Lisa moved back home in Owen Sound. She was 5 months pregnant. In the days and weeks following her disappearance, the OPP conducted a number of searches of the area. During one of the searches, Lisa's driver's licence was found along a roadway. It is likely that it had been tossed from a moving car. It was located on top of tall grass. Six months before her disappearance, she and her husband, Terry Maas, separated and she moved in with boyfriend Ron Valliere. The morning before her disappearance, she phoned her father to pick her up. She had decided to end the relationship with Valliere and move back with her parents. Neither Maas nor Valliere are considered suspects, police have said. Her father moved her back home, but, on July 16, 1988, she went out with friends in Owen Sound, then to the Woodford party. Before heading to the party, she left her car at a friend's place. She and her friends got to the party about 3 a.m. on July 17. She later got a ride back to her vehicle. Later that Sunday, it was found stuck in the mud, the doors and trunk open, but it wasn't reported to police for two days.

Rowe, Cheryl

Missing: Cheryl Rowe

Circumstances

After Christmas shopping together on Dec. 21, Cheryl told Kristina — who was sleeping at a friend's house that night — that she'd meet her in a nearby park at around 11 p.m. with a bag of fresh clothes for the following day. Kristina says she spoke to Cheryl, who was running late, but told her she'd be leaving the Browndale Crescent address where Mitchell currently lives, when her ride arrived. Family report Cheryl leaving with a bag in hand at around midnight, after a car picked her up. Before meeting Kristina, Cheryl planned to drop by the home of an ex-boyfriend, at 34 Rathfon Cres. She arrived at the home, but Cheryl, 46, never turned up to meet Kristina. On Christmas morning, when Cheryl once again didn't show — the gifts she bought, wrapped and stored at the family's Browndale home — Kristina called York police and filed a missing persons report.

Bauer, Ingrid

Missing: Ingrid Bauer

Contact York Regional Police Cold Case Unit: 1-866-876-5423 ext. 7865 or email the investigators directly at coldcase@yrp.ca or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
